Relevant Experience

What is it: Any exposure to your area of interest - shadowing a professional, attending a university taster day, entering a design competition, helping with a family business, or doing a short course.

Why it matters: Targeted experience helps students test their ideas and talk confidently about why they’re pursuing a certain path. It also builds networks, clarifies goals, and boosts the strength of applications in competitive fields like medicine, law or design.

Opportunities:

  • Writing a blog on a chosen interest area (e.g. politics, AI, fashion)

  • Creating a digital portfolio or website

  • Online course (e.g. UX design, cybersecurity, finance, health science)

  • Volunteering in a related field (e.g. hospital, tech, startup, studio)

  • Entering a competition in your field of interest (essay comp, mock trial, UN Youth)

  • Attending uni open days or subject masterclasses.
